The Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, one of the most important establishments for the research and study of Greek history (ancient, medieval and modern) at international level, is pleased to announce the organisation of its first Summer School on Ancient Greek and Roman Numismatics, to take place at its premises in Athens, from 3 to 12 July 2017. 

The ten-day intensive Summer School aims at familiarising those who have little or no background with the discipline of numismatics by offering a series of courses on methodology and various special themes. It will consist of lectures, practical sessions and visits to numismatic collections (Numismatic Museum, Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, KIKPE/Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs Numismatic Collection), museums (Acropolis Museum) and archaeological sites in Attica (Lavrion).

The courses will provide a chronological survey of ancient Greek and Roman coinage (from the invention of coinage to the Roman period), combined with special lectures on numismatic methodology, such as the study of coin hoards, metrology, iconography and online resources. Practical sessions will take place at the NHRF premises and in museums.

The Summer School on Numismatics is addressed to undergraduates, postgraduate students and PhD candidates in History, Archaeology and Art History, to historians and archaeologists, but also to individuals with a special interest in numismatics.

The instructors are researchers at the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, with contributions by other experts in Greek and Roman numismatics. Each year a visiting scholar will be invited to develop a special topic. This year’s guest speaker is Dr Christophe Flament, who will focus on the coinage of Athens.

The number of participants is limited to 25. They  will  be selected  by  the Scientific  Committee  following  a  thorough  assessment  of  the application and the CV of the candidates. 

The course will be taught in English.

All students will receive a certificate of participation.

In this decade, museums are not merely a place for displaying information about the history, heritage, historical objects, and conducting education programmes, but the function of museums are transforming to become the strategic communication for institutions takin care of museums. This strategic function of museums is expected to bridge between an interest of the institution in accomplishing its mission to educate the public about the history of the institution, history of the policies and the current policies issued by the institutions, and the interest of the public to gain the knowledge. 
Therefore this Conference is arranged to encourage interactive discussions amongst participants upon the above theme. Participants are expected to deliver presentation on how the transformation of the museum takes place whilst accomplishing its mission to educate the public, how the museum serves its function as a communication tool for an institution, and how the museum responds the challenges encountered for the future development, and what strategy the museum applies in utilising state ­of ­the ­art of technology. 
In preparing the call for papers, participants may select one of several below topics :

• Museum as tools for communicating concepts and policies
• Creating displays which educate the public about numismatic and financial concepts
• Incorporating technology within numismatic museums 

The Institute of Archaeology cordially invites all colleagues to submit proposals for presentations or posters for the conference “Classical Cyprus”,  to be held from  21st to 23rd September 2017. The presentations are limited to 20 mins. Conference languages are English, German, and French.The deadline for submitting proposals and abstracts (max. 300 words, max. two illustrations, pub-lication permit held by the author) is 30th April 2017.  The Conference Committee will eventually decide on the selection and the format of presentation. Young scholars are especially encouraged to submit their papers.
 

Ce séminaire, organisé par l’Ecole française d’Athènes avec le soutien de la MSH Val-de-Loire et l'IRAMAT (UMR 5060), est destiné à des doctorants des universités françaises et étrangères, dont la numismatique n'est pas la spécialité première, mais dont une partie de la recherche est fondée sur ce type de sources, afin de les former aux enjeux, méthodes et techniques d'analyse en numismatique. La formation se déroulera à Athènes et sur le site de Thasos.
Le séminaire comprendra des cours, des visites de musées et de sites, ainsi qu’un atelier pratique sur les monnaies grecques et romaines (étude de matériel archéologique). Cette formation sera l'occasion de concrétiser des liens scientifiques entre doctorants et chercheurs confirmés autour des pratiques du numismate. Formation équivalente à 50h de cours.

Το διεθνές αρχαιολογικό συμπόσιο μελετά την εξέλιξη της πόλης και τη σχέση της με άλλες πόλεις και αρχαιολογικές θέσεις στην Δυτική Κύπρο, από την Ελληνιστική περίοδο μέχρι τους πρώιμους Μεσαιωνικούς χρόνους. Παράλληλα, θα παρουσιαστούν τα πορίσματα όλων των επιστημόνων που εργάζονται στην Πάφο αναφορικά με την ίδρυση της Νέας Πάφου, την πολεοδομική εξέλιξη της , την τέχνη και την αρχιτεκτονική και τις νεκροπόλεις.

The world of maritime archaeology has undoubtedly changed significantly since Honor Frost wrote her seminal volume, Under the Mediterranean (1963). A further milestone in the development of the subject in the Mediterranean was when in 1985 a symposium series began in Greece, the theme: TROPIS, International Symposium on Ship Construction in Antiquity. TROPIS soon became a meeting point for maritime archaeologists working mainly (but not exclusively) in the Mediterranean, who presented on diverse research themes, including shipbuilding, ships and boats, ports and harbours, navigation and seafaring. 

The last TROPIS conference took place on Hydra, in 2008. Since then TROPIS has not been succeeded by another Mediterranean maritime archaeological forum, and yet the discipline has continued to develop as more and more papers with maritime themes are presented in more general interest archaeological conferences. In other words, it seems that maritime archaeology has come of age and the 21st century sees it much better integrated into the world of Archaeology than ever before. However, we believe it is now time to provide a forum for maritime archaeologists working in the Mediterranean to regroup and to re-engage with the early TROPISprinciples. To communicate more widely with others working in the region underwater, on the coasts, and on the land, and to share new finds, methodologies and ideas, including landscapes, trade, connectivity, scientific analysis, cultural management and new technological developments.

Honor Frost, one of the pioneers of Mediterranean maritime archaeology, is sadly no longer with us. However, her legacy lives on, not only in terms of the significant contributions she made to the field in terms of her research, but also in her creation of the another milestone in the history of the maritime archaeology, the Honor Frost Foundation (HFF). 

On 28th October 2017, 100 years will have passed since Honor Frost was born in Cyprus. To mark this event has been decided to celebrate the centenary of Honor Frost’s birth, honour her work and that of her Foundation, by organising an international conference on Cyprus. It will be held over three days and will be hosted in the University of Cyprus, Nicosia. A fourth day will be dedicated to visiting some of the important coastal archaeological sites of Cyprus particularly the pre-Classical harbours the main focus of Honor’s research. Participants will also be invited to sail on the replica Kyrenia Liberty. The conference is largely supported by the HFF. 

Το Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης και η Νομισματική Συλλογή της Alpha Bank συνεργάζονται για πρώτη φορά και διοργανώνουν από κοινού μία μεγάλη έκθεση με τίτλο «ΧΡΗΜΑ. Σύμβολα απτά στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα».

Η έκθεση θα πραγματοποιηθεί από 2 Νοεμβρίου 2017 έως 15 Απριλίου 2018 και θα παρουσιάσει στο ευρύ κοινό εξαιρετικά δείγματα της αρχαίας νομισματοκοπίας, προερχόμενα κατά κύριο λόγο από τη Νομισματική Συλλογή της Alpha Bank. 

Το θέμα της έκθεσης σχετίζεται με τις ποικίλες αναφορές και ερμηνείες των συμβόλων που είναι χαραγμένα επάνω στα νομίσματα, από τα τέλη του 7ου αιώνα π.Χ. έως τη ρωμαϊκή περίοδο. Το νόμισμα αποτελεί, πρωτίστως, το βασικό μέσο συναλλαγής των ανθρώπων, με το οποίο καλύπτουν τις καθημερινές τους ανάγκες. Επίσης, είναι το μέσο με το οποίο το κράτος πραγματοποιεί πληρωμές και εκπληρώνει τις υποχρεώσεις του.

Τα αρχαία νομίσματα, ωστόσο, δεν είναι απλώς μέσα συναλλαγής· είναι και τα ίδια σύμβολα απτά, που κρατά κανείς στα χέρια του, τα «διαβάζει» και τα αντιλαμβάνεται. Απεικονίζουν παραστάσεις, οι οποίες προσφέρουν σημαντικές πληροφορίες, ιστορικές και άλλες, που συνδέονται με τον τόπο και την αρχή η οποία τα εξέδωσε.

Η έκθεση διαρθρώνεται σε οκτώ θεματικές ενότητες. Ξεκινώντας από τα πρώτα ανεικονικά νομίσματα, παρακολουθούμε την εξέλιξη του νέου μέσου συναλλαγής, του κέρματος, που καθιερώθηκε και εξαπλώθηκε τάχιστα στον αρχαίο κόσμο, φέροντας ακόμη και συγκεκριμένες ονομασίες ( π.χ. δαρεικοί, χελώνες, γλαύκες, κ.λπ). Παρατηρώντας την εικονογραφία, διαπιστώνουμε ότι οι όψεις των νομισμάτων μετατρέπονται σε πεδίο συμβολισμού καθώς, σταδιακά, αποτυπώνουν θρησκευτικά σύμβολα, εμπορικά αγαθά, έργα τέχνης, ιστορικά γεγονότα και αφηρημένες έννοιες, όπως ο πλούτος, η ευημερία, η νίκη, αλλά και προπαγανδιστικά μηνύματα της εκάστοτε εξουσίας και εκδότριας αρχής. Η περιήγηση ολοκληρώνεται με την ανάδειξη του ρόλου του νομίσματος στην κοινωνία και με μία σύντομη αναφορά στην αρχαιοελληνική τραπεζική δραστηριότητα.

85 νομίσματα από τη Συλλογή της Alpha Bank παρουσιάζονται μαζί με 160 αντικείμενα (πήλινα αγγεία και ειδώλια, μαρμάρινα και χάλκινα αγαλμάτια, ανάγλυφα, χρυσά κοσμήματα, μετρητικά σκεύη, νομίσματα από κλειστά σύνολα και επιγραφές) που προέρχονται από 32 Αρχαιολογικά Μουσεία και Συλλογές της Ελλάδος, της Ιταλίας, της Γαλλίας και του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου.

Tην έκθεση συνοδεύει επιστημονικός κατάλογος, στην ελληνική και αγγλική γλώσσα, με λήμματα όλων των εκθεμάτων και πλούσιο φωτογραφικό υλικό.

Οι πληροφορίες για τα δάση της Κύπρου και για τη βλάστηση γενικά αρχίζουν ουσιαστικά από τη Μέση Μειόκαινο Εποχή (πριν 15 εκατομμύρια χρόνια). Από τα πρώτα θαμνώδη και δενδρώδη φυτά που εμφανίστηκαν μετά την ανύψωση του Τροόδους και στη συνέχεια του Πενταδακτύλου (πριν 10 εκατομμύρια χρόνια) είναι: η δάφνη, η μερσινιά, η αροδάφνη, η τερατσ’ά, η συτσ’ά και πιθανώς η ελιά. Την ίδια Εποχή εμφανίστηκαν τα παλαιοενδημικά κέδρος, ζουλατσ’ά και ακανθοπράσιον. Παράλληλα, στις δυο οροσειρές, κάποια φυτά εξελίχθηκαν σε ζεύγη ενδημικών, όπως τα είδη Teucrium cyprium (Τρόοδος) – Teucrium kyreniae (Πενταδάκτυλος. Επίσης, από τα απολιθώματα κώνων φαίνεται ότι από το τέλος της Μειόκαινου αρχές της Πλειστόκαινου Εποχής εμφανίστηκαν τα πεύκα και άλλα δενδρώδη και θαμνώδη είδη. Μετά την εγκατάσταση των πρώτων οικιστών άρχισε η ποικιλότροπη αξιοποίηση των φυτών. όπως μαρτυρείται από τα αρχαιοβοτανικά κατάλοιπα που βρέθηκαν σε αρχαιολογικές θέσεις. Πρόσθετες πληροφορίες, άμεσες και έμμεσες, προέρχονται από τα κείμενα αρχαίων συγγραφέων.. Εξίσου σημαντικές πληροφορίες προέρχονται από τους περιηγητές που ήλθαν στην Κύπρο κατά τη διάρκεια της Φραγκοκρατίας, της Ενετοκρατίας και της Τουρκοκρατίας. Σκοπός της διάλεξης είναι να παρουσιάσει την ιστορία των δασών της Κύπρου μέσα από όλα αυτά τα στοιχεία.
