Ce séminaire propose une formation doctorale sur les principales thématiques propres à la recherche sur la religion grecque, en prenant comme cadre d’étude la cité d’Athènes. L’accent sera mis sur les sources épigraphiques, particulièrement abondantes en Attique, sans pour autant négliger les approches archéologiques et philologiques du sujet. Les étudiants auront ainsi l’occasion de se familiariser avec le traitement et l’analyse des sources épigraphiques, notamment par des exercices de lecture sur la pierre et de confection d’estampages.

Ce séminaire est organisé par l’École française d’Athènes, en partenariat avec le laboratoire HERMA de l’Université de Poitiers et l’Université d’Athènes. La formation aura lieu à Athènes et se déroulera essentiellement en français, avec certains cours en anglais ; une excellente compréhension de ces deux langues est exigée, ainsi qu’un bon niveau en grec ancien. Les activités prévues combinent visites de sites et de musées, cours et étude de matériel épigraphique.

Many thousands of coin hoards have been found throughout the geographical area which once constituted the Roman Empire. The information provided by these hoards has the potential to transform our understanding of coin supply, circulation and use, as well as having implications for the study of the Roman economy and the archaeology of religion and ritual. The Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire Project aims to provide a comprehensive summary of this data, thus filling a major lacuna in the digital coverage of hoards from antiquity. This conference will present results from the first three years of the project, as well as exploring new approaches to the study of coin hoards and hoarding and outlining the potential for future research. Papers will form the basis of a monograph on Roman hoarding in the Oxford Studies on the Roman Economy series, published by Oxford University Press.
